Stocks slightly higher, oil barely budges

Stocks held to a narrow range today, finishing the session very slightly higher.  The Dow Jones Industrials rose 28 points, while both the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 edged up 4 points.

After rallying Wednesday, oil futures barely budged today.  January crude was flat, settling at $58.43 a barrel.

Spirits maker Brown-Forman says it has had to lower prices in certain markets where the company sells to distributors. The maker of Jack Daniel’s and Canadian Mist whiskeys and Finlandia vodka notes that its gross margins declined more than two percentage points in the latest quarter.  Brown-Forman shares tumbled 6.3% today.

Having opened 51 years ago, Metairie’s Clearview Mall is in need of a freshening-up.  And it will get it, in the form of a $100 million renovation. New additions will include a150-room budget hotel and a 260-unit apartment building.
