Tropical development likely in the Gulf this week

Tropics

The National Hurricane Center expects to see a former tropical storm that made landfall in Central America reform in the Gulf of Mexico.

"A large area of disturbed weather, associated with the remnants of eastern Pacific Tropical Storm Amanda, is located over the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.  This disturbance is forecast to move northwestward over the southeastern portion of the Bay of Campeche later today or tonight where environmental conditions are expected to be conducive to support development," federal forecasters advised.

They expect the low to become a new tropical depression within the next day or so.

"The  system is then forecast to drift west or west-southwest over the southern Bay of Campeche through the middle of the week."

That means it will be next weekend before we could see the system move toward the US Gulf Coast.

"Regardless of tropical cyclone formation, heavy rainfall is likely to continue over portions of southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, and western Honduras during the next few days."

The forecast models are all over the place with #Invest93L. Some want to keep it in the Bay of Campeche while other take it north in the western Gulf toward Texas & Louisiana. Regardless of where this tracks we could have some heavy rain NEXT Sunday-Tuesday. #BeOn4 #NOLA @WWLTV pic.twitter.com/IEX6nhkbzb

WWL TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum says after that model disagree if the system heads for Louisiana Sunday or Monday.

"Forecast models show the low trying to become a new tropical depression or even a storm (Cristobal) in the western Gulf of Mexico later this week and weekend. The models do not agree with where this low could track. They range from Mexico to the SE Texas Coast. We will be watching this closely all week," Nussbaum said.
