In football, LSU doesn’t get many calls when they play Alabama, but on the baseball diamond on Saturday, a big call went the Tigers way and it helped LSU defeat the Crimson Tide 5-2 to even up their series.
With the game tied in the 4th inning and two outs and two runners on, the Tigers leading hitter, Zach Watson, hit a towering fly ball down the left field line and over the fence. The umpire ruled it went foul, after a lengthy review by the instant replay judge in Birmingham, it was ruled a home run.
It gave LSU a 4-1 lead and the Tigers were able to hold on for a victory, to improve their record to 28-16 overall, 12-8 in the SEC.
Eric Walker (4-3) was the winning pitcher as he struck out nine in 5.1 innings. He gave up just one home run and that was to lead off hitter in the first inning. Todd Peterson got in a little trouble in the 7th inning and gave up a run, pitched well over two innings and Devin Fontenot earned his fifth save as he got the final four outs.
LSU had nine hits. Watson led the way with three hits to raise his average to ,353. Gavin Dugas made just his second start at second base and had two hits. Chris Reid and Cade Beloso drove in runs.
The Tigers and Tide will wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 PM. Landon Marceaux is scheduled to start. He’ll make his first weekend start since March 2nd when he was roughed up in Texas.
