Georgia scored eight runs in the second inning, and LSU never really recovered as the Tigers lost to the Bulldogs 13-8 on Saturday night in Athens.
How it happened: LSU freshman pitcher Marcos Paz struggled with his command and didn’t make it past the second inning. After getting through the first inning, despite walking two hitters and hitting another hitter. Georgia got to Paz in the second inning.
Of course, it was a lead-off walk that started the eight-run rally. It seems like it always starts with a lead-off walk that results in big innings for the opposing team.
An ugly line for Paz against a talented line-up. He gave up seven runs, five hits, and four walks in 1.1 innings.
Walks were a problem again for LSU pitchers. They walked 13 hitters on Saturday night, hit two others, and threw three wild pitches.
Two big swings for LSU’s offense: A bases-clearing double by Cade Arrambide and a three-run home run by Chris Stanfield, and that was pretty much it for LSU’s offense.
What it means: Georgia won its first SEC regular-season championship since 2008. Great job by former LSU pitching coach, Wes Johnson, he’s built a national championship contender in Athens, Georgia.
LSU needed to win four of its last six heading into the weekend for a shot at the NCAA Tournament; after dropping the first two games, the Tigers have to win their last four regular-season games, and there’s very little hope that LSU can hold down Georgia offensively on Sunday.
LSU is 29-23 overall, 9-17 in the SEC, as this will go down as one of the most disappointing Tiger baseball seasons in history.
