Garic: LSU early signing day a mixed bag of big gains and a few losses

The LSU Tigers 2020 recruiting class is a mixed bag of success sprinkled with a little disappointment. The two headlines from this class are TE Arik Gilbert, and CB Elias Ricks.  Both are five star recruits.  Gilbert was previously a Georgia commitment, before flipping over to the Tigers last month.

LSU's remarkable year in football did not play a big part of this year’s class.  Most of these players were already committed to the Tigers prior to the start of the season.  The success of 2019 will start to bare fruit in 2021 and 2022.

The Tigers also did well signing four start OLB Phill Webb.   He can really rush the passer and projects to be an excellent pass rusher at the college level.  LSU also landed another stud offensive lineman, signing Marcus Dumervil.  He's the nephew of former NFL pass rusher Elvis Dumervil.

The Bayou Bengals did lose out on commitments from wide receivers Rakim Jarret and Jermaine Burton.  Jarret picked Maryland over LSU and Burton committed to Georgia.  The spurning of Burton and Jarret makes this LSU recruiting class a little less sexy, and frankly a bit a of a surprise.  In particular because this Tiger offense features the skill set of wide receivers.

Defensively the Tigers missed out on five star DE Jordan Burch.  South Carolina won out on Burch over LSU, Alabama, and Georgia.

LSU is only signed 19, which is down from a projected 23 to 24 players.  The Tigers will regroup and continue to pursue the remaining recruits that will sign in February.  LSU has not signed a running back yet, but that isn't a big surprise considering the talent log jam they currently have with some really impressive freshmen already on the roster.  Below is the list of the LSU commitments by position.
