Bobby Hebert: Why can’t Saints have DE-by-committee?

A question on defense the Saints have been trying to answer is at defensive end. On one side, they have an All-Pro in Cameron Jordan, but the they need a steady presence opposite of him. The Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert feels that production doesn’t have to fall on the shoulders of just one person.

“You know we always say running back-by-committee; why can’t it be defensive end-by-committee," wondered Hebert during Sports Talk.  “Next guy up, just go make a play.”

The Saints are hoping that next guy up is Marcus Davenport. The 2018 1st round pick has tallied 10.5 sacks in his first 2 seasons, which have ended early due to lower body injuries.

“I’m very confident in Marcus Davenport and I think he’s ready to roll,” Hebert said. “Now, he’s not wet behind the ears, he’s a veteran. He knows what it takes. He’s not scared of nobody.”

The other piece to the DE tandem Hebert would like to see the Saints utilize is Trey Hendrickson. The 2017, 3rd round pick is entering the final year of his rookie deal and has dealt with a number of injuries. In 13 games last season, he recorded 4.5 sacks.

The Cannon is optimistic both Davenport and Hendrickson can put together healthy, productive 2020 seasons by keeping each other fresh in a rotation.

“What if, all of a sudden, Trey Hendrickson got like 6 sacks and Davenport got like 10 to make 16 total. WHAT!?”
