WWL Saints draft team interested in plan for QB Tommy Stevens

Just when you thought the Saints were not going to make a selection in the final day of the draft, the team traded into the 7th round to select quarterback Tommy Stevens. He played at Mississippi State year after transferring from Penn State.

WWL draft analyst Mike Detillier was not impressed with the move. “He wouldn’t have been the guy I picked,” Detillier said after the selection was announced.  “He’s inconsistent as a passer. Why weren’t you the starter at Penn State? Why weren’t you the full-time starter at Mississippi State?"

In his 6 starts last season, Stevens completed 60% of the passes throwing 11 TDs with 5 INTs. Saints radio color analyst Deuce McAllister brought up that maybe Stevens is more of a back-up for Taysom Hill, then he is for Drew Brees.

“He’s got to be like Taysom Hill, as far as starting out,” Deuce stated. “When Stevens played at Penn State he lined up at running back and wide receiver. So he has played other positions.”

Stevens totaled 887 yards rushing with 12 TDs along with making 14 catches for 62 yards and 2 scores as a receiver in his colleg career.

The Cajun Cannon hopes that the young signal caller is open to being another Mr. Do-it-all in the offense.

“He ran a 4.65 40-yard dash basically, so he’s not slow and that’s a big dude,” said Bobby Hebert. “If you’re trying to make it in the NFL, you’re going to do whatever the coaches ask you to do.  You’re not going to be a prima donna, purely a quarterback, if you’re trying to make it.”
