LSU head baseball coach Paul Mainieri will announce at a press conference Friday that he will be stepping down due to health reasons, per sources.

Mainieri's retirement will mark the end of a 39-year career, with the last 15 of those in Baton Rouge. He will stay on with the Tigers through the end of their postseason run should they be selected to the 64-team NCAA Regional field on Monday.

Mainieri will finish seventh all-time in career wins among NCAA baseball coaches, and he led the Tigers to a national championship in 2009.

During his tenure at LSU, he also led the team five College World Series appearances, four SEC championships and six SEC tournament championships.

Mainieri's six SEC tournament titles tie him for the most all-time with LSU's Skip Bertman and Alabama's Jim Wells.

He walks away with a 1,501-774-8 (.659) career record all-time and as the second-winningest coach in LSU history with a 637-282-3 (.693) mark.

As for who might be Mainieri's replacement, East Carolina's Cliff Godwin and Florida's Kevin O'Sullivan are both on the short list of top candidates.

Godwin is interviewing for the vacant coaching job at Texas A&M today, which spurred LSU's decision to go public with Mainieri's retirement earlier than they had planned.

We'll carry Mainieri's press conference live on WWL Radio and wwl.com this afternoon at 4:30.
