LSU’s Spring Game offered several newcomers their first chance to shine on a national stage and many took advantage of the opportunity.
Here’s five newcomers to LSU’s football team that stood out in the Tigers’ Spring Game:
Dwight McGlotherin, CB: The sophomore cornerback played sparingly in seven games last season but showed Saturday that he’s got the ability to make impact plays in the secondary. McGlotherin had a couple near interceptions and was credited with four pass breakups in the scrimmage. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron spoke highly of the 6-foot-2, 182-pound corner’s play following the game.
Derrick Davis Jr., S: Orgeron has touted the early enrollee out of Pennsylvania’s athleticism throughout the spring and Davis showed it finding himself near the ball on several plays. He also made a big play in the second quarter when he forced and recovered a fumble after a big reception by Jontre Kirklin.
Deion Smith, WR: Kirklin and Kayshon Boutte had the biggest games of all the receivers, going for 206 and 162 yards, respectively, but early enrollee Deion Smith also had a nice game catching four passes for 28 yards in the scrimmage.
Jared Small, LB: Small isn’t necessarily a newcomer but played significant snaps for the first time in the spring game. He tallied a game-high 14 tackles and intercepted a pass in the scrimmage. Orgeron said Small has been very impressive this spring and expects the senior linebacker to play on defense in 2021.
Jay Ward, DB: Ward is another player that isn’t a newcomer but lined up at a new position in Saturday’s scrimmage. Ward moved to safety this spring and intercepted a pass during the game to go along with seven total tackles.
