Backup TE leaves LSU football, but Tigers have plenty of pass catching options

LSU football coach Brian Kelly has announced tight end Mac Markway will not play for the Tigers this year after spending one season at LSU. The former four-star recruit from St. Louis is entering the transfer portal.

He caught 3 passes for 16 yards and a touchdown last season.

Kelly says this will give fellow back-up tight ends Ka’Morreun Pimpton and freshman Trey’Dez Green more opportunities.

“Pimpton has been really good the last two practices in particular, his consistency in run blocking, his consistency in catching the football, assignments, have been really good” Kelly said. “By and large, Trey’Dez has assimilated as a freshman as well as a expected”

Pimpton and Green have tremendous size, Pimpton six-foot-six, Green at six-foot-seven. Both will serve as back-ups to veteran starting tight end Mason Taylor, but Kelly said there’s a possibility all three of could be on the field at once.

As far as wide receiver goes, Kelly said Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton and CJ Daniels, the transfer from Liberty University, are the main three guys.

But during practice, several other receivers like Aaron Anderson, are also getting work with the first team, giving them the opportunity to catch passes from Garrett Nussmeier.

“We felt like it was important to get all of those guys work with the first group, because I want Nuss to see all those guys, because he’s probably going to throw all of them at some time,” Kelly said.

Nussmeier and the offense is facing pushback from a more aggressive defense. In fact, Blake Ruffino from AYS Sports said he believed LSU’s defense had its best practice in 18 months on Tuesday.

Young cornerbacks PJ Woodland and Ashton Stamps have made plays with interceptions and passes defensed in the first few days of camp. Kelly said it’s encouraging but wants to see more consistency.

“We’ve put together some good periods of time, there’s no doubt that progress is being made, but not to the point that it’s championship play,” Kelly said.

Senior cornerback Zy Alexander, who started eight games last year before a season-ending knee injury, will likely see more reps with the first team in coming days as he continues to work his way back.
