LSU women's basketball has had a topsy-turvy start to their title defense season, and nothing is more emblematic of that than the mysterious absence of star forward Angel Reese.

The junior who set records and became an internet sensation during her sophomore campaign has been absent for her team's past two games, with head coach Kim Mulkey declining to share details. Rumors abound, and many have centered on potential academic issues. WWL's Bobby Hebert and Mike Detillier weighed in on the situation this week.

"Even though you’re getting paid, now I don’t know, I’m just speculating here, what can you be in trouble for, because it happens in all sports, that you are a college student. So don’t you still have to go to class or make an effort? It’s like, ah, I don’t feel like going to school any more. But no, you’re playing … you still have to make an effort and go to class."

The Tigers had no issue taking down Southeastern Louisiana without Reese, and appeared well on their way to a win over Texas Southern with a 31-point halftime lead. Still, LSU kicked off its season with a loss to Colorado and has fallen from No. 1 in the country to No. 7. The LSU women will see a step-up in competition soon with a No. 9 Virginia Tech heading to the PMAC on Nov. 30.

"I think Kim Mulkey has handled this pretty well, whatever the situation is," Detillier said. "if it’s grades or whatever … because she’s been through this before.”
