The spring transfer period window opened on Tuesday and several LSU Tigers have entered. But the Tigers needed some attrition to get below the NCAA scholarship limit of 85. They had 88 scholarship players when spring football ended.

Tight end Connor Gilbreath, wide receiver Khai Prean, cornerback Ryan Robinson Jr., and edge rusher Jaxon Howard are four players from LSU who have entered the portal. All four were at the bottom of the depth chart. ‘

LSU’s main target in the transfer portal is defensive tackle. Coach Brian Kelly was clear they need to add to that position group. LSU went through spring with run stopper Jacobian Guillory, JUCO defensive Shone Washington. Jalen Lee, freshman De’Myrion Johnson, former offensive lineman KImo Maskane’ole and Dominick McKinley.

Guillory goes into next season a starter, but it is a question mark who will be the other starter at defensive tackle.

LSU has already received a commitment from one defensive tackle who was in the transfer portal, Gio Paez from Wisconsin. Paez had 22 tackles last season for the Badgers.

Indiana defensive lineman Phillip Blidi was in town for the Spring Game last week. Blidi would be a graduate transfer who had 30 tackles, four tackles for a loss and a press break up for the Hoosiers. He also appeared in 34 games for Texas Tech as he spent three seasons in Lubbock.

LSU has also offered Kent State defensive CJ West. He was a third-team ALL-MAC selection last season. The Illinois native has 110 career tackles and sacks. Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas A&M, Miami, and Colorado are among the other schools who have offered him.

Expect LSU to sign at least two defensive tackles if not three. If LSU has room, they could also sign a running back, cornerback or punter.

Suspended running back Trey Holly pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge and his next court hearing is July 3rd.

Based on what we saw in the spring game, if LSU sees a top-notch corner in the transfer portal, the Tigers will go after him.

Kelly was also a little disappointed in punter Peyton Todd’s performance in the spring game and adding some competition to that position is possible.

The spring transfer portal is open through April 30th. Schools can sign players beyond the April 30th date, but players who want to be in the transfer portal have to be in by April 30th.

It is an SEC rule that a player who enters the transfer portal in April can not transfer from one SEC school to another. So that’s why former Ponchatoula star Jacoby Matthews is not an option for LSU. The safety is looking for a new home after spending two seasons at Texas A&M.

But NCAA athletes have been successful in the courtroom lately, so there is always a chance a player can challenge that SEC rule.
