One of the state’s top high school football players has given his verbal pledge to the LSU Tigers. Markez Davis from Northwest High School in St. Landry Parish has committed to the Tigers. The Opelousas native is ranked by 247 Sports as the 15th-best player in Louisiana and is listed as an athlete, but is expected to play cornerback at LSU.
“He’s been exclusively a wide receiver for the first three years,” said Northwest head coach Chris Edwards. “He played a little bit of cornerback this past year, towards the end of the season, due to injury. They might have thrown at him 10-11 times, and he had 3 interceptions. So, once we got that on film, he was just a real natural at catching the ball being a receiver, so he picked up on it really well, and it took off from there.”
Edwards has been the head coach at Northwest for 13 years. They’ve known for a while that Davis would be special.
“My junior high coach called me, I’ll never forget he was in the sixth grade, and he said this kid is going to change the program one day,” Edwards said.
Davis will be the first player from Northwest to sign with a Power 4 school. Texas Tech, West Virginia, and Houston are also recruiting him.
Edwards also says Davis is a pleasure to be around off the field.
“His smile brightens up the day, just an overall very good kid, his athleticism is a plus,” Edwards said.
LSU adds a 3rd receiver to the class
LSU football received a commitment on Monday from four-star wide receiver Cade Cooper. He’s six-foot-three, 192 pounds, and is ranked as the tenth-best prospect in the state of Pennsylvania. 247 Sports LSU recruiting analyst Andre Champagne says Cooper possesses unique traits.
“He’s got a lot of length, so he’s going to be a guy who is going to catch one-on-one passes,” Champagne said. “He’s a polished route runner. He’s not scared of competition. He talked to me last night and made it known that the more talent, the better. Lane Kiffin’s offenses have had multiple guys’ flourish.”
Cooper was leaning to go to Ole Miss, because that was one of the first schools to offer him, but gave a verbal pledge to the Tigers after visiting LSU this past weekend.
LSU’s 2027 class now has eight commitments and is ranked 44th in the country by 247 Sports.
The other two receivers in the class are Ah’Mari Stevens from Florida and Braylon Calais from Cecilia High School.
