Don’t look now but the LSU Tigers are 3-1 in SEC play after another impressive win. The Tigers started off conference play with a win on the road at Texas A&M and on Wednesday night LSU earned its first victory over a ranked opponent this season, beating Ole Miss 89-80.
LSU is now 11-6 on the season, 3-1 in the SEC. Remember last year they only had two conference wins.
LSU led 35-33 at halftime but erupted for 54 points in the second half.
“I thought our offensive execution in the second half minus couple possessions at the end of the game where it made it more interesting than it needed be, was just terrific, 5-of-8 from three in the second half, 55% from the floor, guys did a great job making free throws,” said LSU coach Matt McMahon.
LSU also took away one of the Rebels’ biggest strengths. Ole Miss came into the game with a 3-point shooting percentage of 40%. The Rebels were 6-of-24 from three-point land on Wednesday.
Jordan Wright led the Tigers offensively with 27 points, 16 of them came in the second half.
Wright has been an outstanding addition to this team. The transfer from Vanderbilt is averaging a career-high 16 points a game. Wright was a standout high school player at the Dunham School in Baton Rouge. He’s enjoying his time back in the Capital City.
“I’m excited for the rest of the season with the support that we had tonight, it was incredible, definitely what I wanted, what I envisioned was to have this type of environment, win these type of games against a Top 25 opponent, it was incredible,” said Wright.
LSU faces Texas A&M again this Saturday at the PMAC. The Aggies are off to a slow start in league play with a 1-3 record.
