The College World Series has saved the best opening round matchup for last as third seeded Arkansas takes on sixth seeded LSU on Saturday night in a game with huge ramifications.

The winner will find itself in an excellent position to reach the CWS championship series, needing just two victories. The loser will have to win four games in four days in stave off elimination and get to Saturday’s championship series.

Both teams will throw their ace in tonight’s matchup. Kade Anderson (10-1, 3.58 ERA) will go for LSU. He’s second in the nation with strikeouts with 163 and trails Tennessee’s Liam Doyle who has 164.

When Anderson faced Arkansas earlier this season he struck out 10 and allowed three runs over 5.2 innings. Anderson gave up two home runs in that game.

Arkansas is fourth in the country in home runs as they’ve hit a program record 124 home runs in a single season.

SEC Player of the Year Wehiwa Aloy leads the Hogs in homers with 20, tied for fourth most by a Hog in a season. He’s one of seven Arkansas hitters with double-digit homers.

On the mound, Arkansas will also send a left-hander to hill, Zach Root (8-5, 3.59 ERA). Root struck out six and gave up two runs in his outing earlier this season against LSU.

Coach Jay Johnson said what makes Root effective is that he pounds the strike zone.

The game was eventually won by the Tigers in extra innings. An Ethan Frey sacrifice fly scored Jared Jones from third base in the 10th inning in one of two games that ended at 1:17 in the morning for LSU.

Root was dominant last week against Tennessee. He allowed just one earned run over seven innings and struck out six. Root also pitched with a lot of emotion as Tennessee got to him for four runs in 3.2 innings in their regular season matchup.

Expect a lot of emotion for tonight’s game as two great baseball programs with huge fan bases go after each other.

These two teams last met in the CWS in 2009 and LSU won both matchups on their way to a sixth national championship in program history.

First pitch is at 6 PM tonight and our coverage on WWL Radio begins at 5:30.
