For the first time in the LSU women’s basketball program history, the Lady Tigers defeated Tennessee twice in the same season. Both games were close and on Sunday, LSU prevailed 82-77 to improve to 10-1 in the SEC.

The 25th overall win of the season is a good one for LSU to build on, because they didn’t have to rely on its Big 3 to get the victory.

LSU turned to its bench in the third quarter as Flau’Jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow got into foul trouble.

Mjarcle Sheppard came off the bench to score eight points and grab five rebounds. Freshman Jada Richard had five points in five minutes and Kailyn Gilbert busted out of a shooting slump and scored 21 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 23 points.

Gilbert made the game winning bucket in the first matchup against Tennessee and said she gets up for the Volunteers because they were late to call after she entered the transfer portal following two seasons at Arizona.

It was good to see the bench step up, because the bench only scored two points in the loss to South Carolina last month.

LSU has another Top 5 matchup in front of them as the Lady Tigers have a whole week to prepare for a Sunday showdown against 3rd ranked Texas.

The Longhorns are 24-2 and just ended South Carolina’s 57-game SEC winning streak by beating the Gamecocks on Sunday 66-62.

With five regular season games left, LSU, Texas and South Carolina are in a three-way tie for first place in the SEC.
