LSU women's basketball reloads with three transfer portal additions

The LSU women’s basketball team needed help in the backcourt after guards Hailey Van Lith, Angelica Velez and Janae Kent all left the program through the transfer portal, while Angel Reese departed for the WNBA.

Coach Kim Mulkey countered those departures by signing three players out of the transfer portal.

Shayeann Day-Wilson from Miami is a former ACC Freshman of the Year, when she was at Duke for the 2021-22 season. Day-Wilson saw her numbers drop her sophomore season at Duke and transferred to Miami and had a good season for the Hurricanes last season.

Day-Wilson averaged close to 12 points a game last season at Miami and she’s a good three-point shooter at 37-percent. Also, during her three-year college career, Day-Wilson has more assists than turnovers, 300-to-223.

Five-foot-eight guard Kailyn Gilbert also brings experience and the ability to score. Gilbert comes to LSU after two seasons at Arizona and averaged 15 points a game. Gilbert doesn’t shoot a lot of three-pointers, but she was 24-of-60 last season from three-point range and averaged two assists a game.

Five-foot-ten guard Mjarcle Sheppard is the final new addition. Sheppard just spent her freshman season at Mississippi State and averaged five points and two assists a game. Sheppard was a four-star recruit coming out of Montverde Academy in Florida.

This trio of transfers joins forward Jersey Wolfenbarger and incoming freshman Jada Richard from Lafayette Christian as the new additions to the LSU women’s basketball programs.
