LSU's defense is scary bad

What happened Saturday was fundamentally wrong, no way should an LSU team score 49 points on the road and still lose.

“We need to be pissed off about what happened and have some resolve about our circumstances that’s not a standard of play that’s acceptable,” said Kelly.

What’s scary is that I don’t think Kelly and defensive coordinator Matt House have any answers.

Cornerbacks Ashton Stamps and Laterrance Welch have been barely used but they started on Saturday. Linebacker Omar Speights returned to the starting lineup, they had a deep rotation along the defensive line as several players like Paris Shand and Jordan Jefferson saw playing time.

I’m sure adjustments were made, but Ole Miss had open holes to run through, receivers found themselves wide open and tackling, I can’t even describe how badly they tackled.

“There’s nobody else walking through the door, we don’t have another corner, these are the guys that have to play for us and we have to continue to develop them and they have to continue to work at getting better each and every week,” said Kelly.

You know it’s bad when the coach says there’s nobody else walking through the door.

Kelly knows the talent he has on defense is not good enough and there are serious questions whether defensive coordinator Matt House and the rest of the defensive coaches are good enough.

The coaching is where it starts, as the players are not being put in positions to succeed and maybe the scheme is too much for this group that features a bunch of transfer portal players in the defensive secondary.

There’s no doubt LSU misses safety Greg Brooks Jr.

The pass rush is also non-existent. Every now and then linebacker Harold Perkins makes a play, but because there’s not another quality pass rusher, opposing teams are able to focus their attention on him.

And this futility on defense is throwing away what is a great offense!

“Listen we are not going to cancel the season, we are going to be there and we are going to work our tails off to get better,” said Kelly.

Last year LSU’s season turned around after a disappointing loss at home to Tennessee. But that game slipped away from LSU in the 1st quarter, and they never could catch up.

But in 2023, LSU has a frightening bad defense.

LSU fans will need to put their hands over their eyes when the defense is on the field, because what opposing offenses can do to them is downright ghastly.
