Orgeron: Ryan Nielsen is a 'prime candidate' for LSU's defensive coordinator job

LSU head football coach Ed Orgeron appeared on the Second Guess Show Monday night with WWL Radio’s Bobby Hebert and Mike Detillier and updated the Tigers’ search for a new defensive coordinator.

Earlier on Monday, multiple reports linked New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen to the position that became vacant after Bo Pelini and LSU agreed to part ways following the 2020 season.

Orgeron said the Tigers are still in the process of finding the defensive assistant.

“Ryan is obviously a prime candidate for us,” he told Hebert and Detillier. “(I) love Ryan. Coached him at USC, bright young mind, can run the whole defense. And we are in the process right now of figuring out who we are going to hire and I think we are very close.”

Nielsen just completed his fourth season as the Saints defensive line coach. Prior to joining New Orleans, he served as an assistant at North Carolina State from 2013-16.

The California native started 30 games and played for current Orgeron at USC from 1998-2001.
