As the Jay Johnson era begins with LSU baseball, it'll do so with a contract that rivals the top reaches of the sport.
The 44-year-old former Arizona coach's contract was reported at $6.5 million over 5 years and before incentives, according to a report from The Advocate.
His annual salary will begin at $1.2 million and increase by $50,000 increments each season until it expires in 2026.
That puts Johnson in the range of his predecessor, Paul Mainieri, who was among the top-paid coaches in college baseball. It also marks a significant raise from his contract with the Wildcats, which was reported at just shy of $857K -- including a COVID adjustment -- for the 2021 season. He was the second-highest paid coach at the College World Series in Omaha, behind only Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin whose salary was reported at $1.2 million.
Johnson is scheduled to be officially introduced Monday by LSU, beginning with a press conference at 4:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A session with fans.
