The LSU Tigers are in the winner’s bracket of the Chapell Hill Regional, but they would not be there without Steven Milam. The five-foot-eight second baseman from New Mexico has been a rock for this Tigers team even though it’s his first year in college baseball.

“Monster” Milam as he’s called hit two home runs including a walk-off blast in the ninth inning as the Tigers avoided the upset and defeated Wofford 4-3 in the opening game of the Chapel Hill Regional.

It was Milam’s second home run of the game and his second walk-off homer in the last week as he also ended the come from behind victory over South Carolina last weekend in the SEC Tournament.

In a season that saw many LSU hitters struggle at times, Milam has been the one constant. And to think he didn’t even start opening day.

But it became clear early in the season that Milam should be in the line-up in every game, because of his consistent at-bats from both sides of the plate and the good defense he provides at second base.

Milam is the team’s second leading hitter with a .332 batting average and now he’s starting to hit with power. He’s hit four home runs in his last six games and has eight dingers on the season.

Perfect Game ranked Milam as the 32nd best shortstop in the country coming out of high school. But he’s turned out to be one of the most important players on this LSU team.

Without him, the Tigers are likely watching the postseason from their homes instead of celebrating walk-off wins.
