The fifth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team scored the first 17 points of the fourth quarter to pull away from Florida on Sunday and improve to 20-0 with an 80-63 victory.
The Gators started strong, scoring 21 points in the first quarter, but they faded as the game went on and did not score in the first 5:47 of the fourth quarter.
Coach Kim Mulkey credits defense, holding Florida to 38-percent shooting.
“We got to learn to trust each other, sometimes we leave each other on an island, you got your guy, you got her, everybody guard the ball and I thought we did that in spurts,” Mulkey said.
Mulkey is also pleased with only nine turnovers.
Mikayla Williams had 22 points and Aneesah Morrow added 20 points and 10 boards.
That’s now 92 double doubles for Morrow’s career, tying her with Oregon’s Jillan Alleyne for second most in Division One history.
Mulkey also set a milestone by guiding LSU to 20 wins in a season. In 25 seasons as a head coach, Mulkey has won at least 20 games a year.
But she is 0-4 versus South Carolina as the head coach at LSU.
The Lady Tigers will take on 2nd ranked South Carolina on Thursday night in Columbia.
But Mulkey was not ready to talk about the Gamecocks during her postgame press conference on Sunday.
“I can’t even think about South Carolina, I got to worry about snow and ice when I get home,” Mulkey said.
LSU will practice Monday and they hope to practice Tuesday despite the threat of a major snowstorm.
The Lady Tigers are set to fly out of Baton Rouge late Wednesday afternoon if the roads allow them to get to the airport.
