The Preakness is set to run this Saturday and all eyes will surely be on the odds-on favorite, Medina Spirit.
This year's Kentucky Derby winner has been the subject of scandal ahead of this race after he tested positive for steroids following the Derby victory. Not that it’s his fault. His trainer, Bob Baffert, has been releasing new statements basically every day with different explanations for the positive test. But none of this is keeping Medina Spirit from running in the Preakness this weekend.
Not only is he running, but he's favored to win the race. With 9-5 odds to win this second leg of the Triple Crown, Medina Spirit is just ahead of Concert Tour, who has 5-2 odds. Medina Spirit’s odds to finish last are 22-1.
While Medina Spirit prepares for the Preakness, Baffert has had his own media circus going on response to the horse’s betamethasone steroid positive test. Baffert's latest explanation is Medina Spirit was treated with an ointment that he did not know contained betamethasone.
His previous excuses included cancel culture and the horse ate hay with positive urine on it.
Odds are also available for whether or not Medina Spirit will keep his Kentucky Derby victory, with No as the favorite at -300 and Yes at +240.
But for now, Medina Spirit’s eyes are on the prize ahead of the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans this weekend amid the drama he most likely doesn’t know exists.
