Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced his retirement from the NFL Sunday.
Brees has been one of New Orleans’ most beloved residents since joining the Saints as a free agent in 2006.
Another budding New Orleans sports star, Pelicans forward Zion Williamson, spoke after the Pelicans Sunday night win against the Clippers and called Brees a legend.
“I think everybody knows that he’s a legend,” Williamson said. “He gave his heart and soul to the game. I know a lot of people sad to see him go.
Williamson also shared a message he received from Brees when he first arrived in the Crescent City.
“Drew told me the truest thing, I think anybody’s every told me, when I first came to New Orleans: ‘If you love the city it will love you right back,” Williamson said. “Whenever new people come visit that’s the same thing I tell them. That’s the kind of influence he’s had on me.”
Several other prominent figures in the sports world also shared tributes and well wishes for Brees following his announcement.
