As Week 2 of the Louisiana high school football season begins, the entire football community in the state is looking to put behind it what was a rought first week back on the gridiron.

The festive and joyous atmosphere surrounding the season's open was sucked away in an instant. A 16-year-old was shot and killed at a game in West Baton Rouge Parish--a game featuring a long-standing rivalry between two schools located only a few miles from each other, Port Allen and Brusly. A second game in northeastern Louisiana was called early because fight broke out between the two teams. Another fight at a different game led to one team forfeiting its game this week because that team doesn't have enough players to take the field.

Now, yet another controversy is brewing in Ouachita Parish. West Monroe High School head coach Todd Garvin is on administrative leave after after a player was hospitalized on Labor Day for heat exhaustion, the fourth such case at that school this summer.

In Southeast Louisiana, Zachary and John Curtis will have the week off after a scheduling snafu between the schools led to each believing they were hosting the other this weekend.

As the week 2 schedule of games nears, the Louisiana football community is hoping that this week's games renew the excitement for the season that seemingly was zapped by the events of the last week. This week's schedule features a ton of outstanding matchups between defending state champions, regional rivals, and teams looking to test themselves early in the season.
