This according to a new report from the New York Post's Andrew Marchand, who said that Aikman was "deep in talks" with ESPN to become its lead color analyst for the "Monday Night Football."

A deal was not yet finalized but was soon expected to be, per Marchand, and it could pay Aikman somewhere in the neighborhood of the rich 10-year, $180 million contract lavished by CBS Sports on fellow former Cowboys star quarterback-turned-analyst Tony Romo.

It was unclear who would serve as Aikman's play-by-play partner, the report said, though one possibility could be former longtime NBC Sports fixture Al Michaels, who is now a free agent after his contract expired. Michaels has been engaged in talks with Amazon, per the report.

ESPN in recent years has been widely reported to be intent on pairing a more permanent, formidable duo after seeing something of a revolving door since the longtime tandem of Miki Tirico and Jon Gruden was broken up during the last decade.

The Worldwide Leader took over production of the famed Monday night broadcast from parent company Disney in 2006.
