Another reason to miss Thomas Morstead? The story behind his new jersey number

As Thomas Morstead begins the next part of his NFL career in a jersey of a different color, he's still got a way of tugging on the heartstrings of the black and gold faithful.

After being cut by the Saints after more than a decade following the 2020 season, he continued to work out with an eye on signing elsewhere. He didn't have a roster in Week 1, but signed with the New York Jets ahead of Week 2 to join former Saints special teams ace Justin Hardee.

With Morstead's departure and the retirement of Drew Brees last offseason, Malcolm Jenkins now stands as the lone member of the Saints' Super Bowl roster on the team in 2021.

The 35-year-old shared a photo of himself working in his new jersey, the No. 4, a change from his year's of No. 6 in New Orleans -- which was already being worn on his new roster by kicker Matt Ammendola.

So why the switch? It's all about family, Morstead explains, with the decision coming after a chat with his wife, Lauren.

"Knowing how much I was going to miss being around our kids every day, she suggested I choose 4," explains Morstead, who said he plans to reside in New Orleans despite no longer playing for the hometown team. "That way every time I put this jersey on I'll think of Rosalie, Maggie, Beckett and Maxwell."

The Jets, and most likely Morstead, are in action on Sunday when they host the New England Patriots.
