An early morning notification from the Saints saying that practice would be indoors was a blessing since weather alerts were flashing a potential heat index of … 105 degrees!
WR Tre’Quan Smith remains out. It’s now been a week since we saw him leave a workout early. Two others players exited before today’s session ended in G/T Andrus Peat and rookie DE Payton Turner.
Kicker Wil Lutz, T Terron Armstead, CB P.J. Williams, CB KeiVarae Russell, CB Adonis Alexander, TE Ethan Wolf and LBs Demario Davis, Pete Werner & Quentin Poling did not practice. Also, Patrick Robinson’s #21 is now being worn by Prince Amukamara since P-Rob retired after 11 years in the league, which includes a Super Bowl title with the Philadelphia Eagles. New kicker Brett Maher now has #6.
ACTION-PACKED 2 MINUTES

With the clock set at 1 minute, 55 seconds and three timeouts, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston got an opportunity to work from their own 30-yard line in the first 2-minute drill of camp we’ve seen.
Hill would hit Marquez Callaway for a first down, but then the offense stalled and was unable to move the chains again.
Winston stepped in and led a drive that began with a nice hook-up with rookie WR Kawaan Baker. On 3rd down, Chris Hogan ran a comeback for a big first down gain, but the defense would have forced a field goal attempt. With no timeouts on the 5-yard line, Winston chucked the ball out the back of the end zone with 2 ticks left on the clock.
Taysom’s next series ended with better results, tossing a touchdown to Juwan Johnson. It was about a 25-yard strike that the TE jumped to snag for the score. Winston wasn’t as lucky as the 2nd teamers went four and out their 2nd try.
JUWAN'S STOCK CLIMBING
A position switch has certainly had a positive effect on Juwan Johnson. He needs to work on blocking more, but the former receiver now tight end has been incredible with his ability to get open and is a solid 6-ft-4, 234-pound target that presents some problems in the red zone.
The Saints typically keep 3 TEs so Johnson is likely competing with Garrett Griffin, Ethan Wolf and Josh Pederson for a spot behind Adam Trautman and Nick Vannett.
