Detillier: Saints likely to start Rattler over Shough at QB to begin season

The New Orleans Saints will play their first preseason game on Sunday. The million-dollar question is: who will the Saints starter be not only against the Los Angeles Chargers this weekend but also during the regular season opener next month against the Arizona Cardinals?

According to one analyst, it's still anyone's guess.

"You're only a quarter of the race done, so to speak," NFL analyst Mike Detillier told WWL's Tommy Tucker.

However, even though four weeks remain until the start of the regular season, Detillier believes the coaching staff may know more about the quarterback situation than they're saying.

"I do suspect that Kellen Moore knows who he will start the season with," Detillier said. "I think if you had to pick now, it would be Spencer Rattler."

Detillier says Moore's decision about the starting quarterback comes down to one question.

"Who will give me the best chance win early on?" Detillier said. "That's why I think he'll go early on with Rattler. Eventually, the baton gets put in the hands of Tyler Shough, but if it was today, I'd have no doubt he'd go with Spencer Rattler."

According to Detillier, Rattler is not guaranteed to remain the starter throughout the season.

"You didn't pick Tyler Shough with the 40th overall pick in the draft for him to watch all season. You picked him to eventually become your guy, and somewhere down the line, he's going to get his opportunity to be the starting quarterback for this team, but if you ask me about Game 1 today against Arizona, I would say it's Spencer Rattler."

The Saints and the Chargers will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday on WWL.
