The New Orleans Saints kept four undrafted free agents on their initial 2024 roster, but none was a greater success story than Rico Payton, a former Division-II player.

It's a great story of development and perseverance by a young player, because how he found himself in the team's future plans isn't complicated, as WWL's Deuce McAllister broke down this week.

If they flip flop them as far as even to run the scout team, yes, you’re not running the Saints offense, but how many reps does the — how many reps does the No. 2 quarterback get when the Saints practice offensively anyway? One or two. That’s it. If it’s 12 offensive snaps, your No. 2 guy gets 1 or 2. That’s it. That’s it. You’re not getting a ton, and so let them young guys develop. Let them develop. I mean, both get to dress on Sunday, both get to dress on Sunday. Now, what they will have to do is declare which player is two or three on Sunday just to say hey, this player can come in and he can’t come out, but if this player goes in then he can’t play anymore. They both get to dress on Sunday. They both can go and compete. Get them as many reps as you can and continue to work. That’s what I care about. Anywhere in there, I don’t think it’s written in stone that once you’re the No. 2 player, No. 2 quarterback that you’re the No. 2 quarterback for the rest of the year. Is that written in stone anywhere? No. So the work continues."
