Drew Brees is the newest -- and most temporary -- member of the Purdue Boilermakers coaching staff, and it was fair to wonder: Is this a stepping stone to something bigger.

But the legendary Saints quarterback made his intentions clear this week on SportsTalk. Is this a sign of things to come? "No."

"This is just a short-term thing. ... This came about just with coach [Jeff] Brohm leaving and us being in a position where we were trying to fill the gap between now and the bowl game,” Brees said.

The short-term position was announced by the school Thursday morning, and came about as the Boilermakers found themselves in need of bodies to coach after Brohm opted to depart for the head job at Louisville. Brees said he had called to offer up his services to his alma mater if they were needed, and it turned out they'd been discussing the same thing. He'll technically be the quarterbacks coach, but he'll also help wherever is needed and can be involved in recruiting.

The Boilermakers face off with LSU in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 2, a matchup that will make for some mixed allegiances in the Brees household. He may be a Boilermaker legend, but his kids grew up in South Louisiana and are very much LSU fans.

“So, here we are," he said. "Coach Brees for a couple weeks.”

Brees retired after the 2020 season and spent one year working as an analyst for Sunday Night Football and the play-by-play man for Notre Dame football, but he stepped away after the 2021 season. Since then he's dived into a variety of projects. When asked about his former teammate getting into the coaching ranks, Alvin Kamara had a pretty blunt assessment: "I think Drew's bored."

But as he's said all along, Brees just has a lot on his plate. Coaching is a grind, and it's not one he intends on jumping into now -- or if you believe him -- ever.

"I’m staying very busy. Raising kids, helping to coach them, doing a little carpool," he said. "Opening up Smalls Sliders and Walk-Ons. That’s keeping me plenty busy.”
