Fans have been waiting for more than two decades to see the New Orleans Saints take the field again in gold jerseys, but that wait will end early in the 2025 season.
The team announced Monday that it'll debut its alternate gold jerseys, a design unveiled earlier this offseason, in its Week 1 matchup with the Cardinals at the Caesars Superdome.
The game will mark the first time since 2002 that the Saints took the field in a jersey that wasn't black or white. Until this point the gold jersey concept was an odd footnote in Saints history, with the team wearing them just once against the Vikings in the 2002 season. The Saints led by a touchdown into the final 30 seconds of that game, but lost 32-31 after a successful Minnesota 2-point conversion.
Bringing back the gold look was the goal of a vocal subset of Saints fans and several players, most notably Cam Jordan, who was featured in the team's announcement video that was posted along with the caption "what's gold is new again."
The jerseys will be paired with the team's alternate black helmets. The Saints also unveiled a white alternate helmet this offseason, which will be paired with the popular color rush jerseys.
The Saints will also be hosting a Prize Hour Jersey Drop Sept. 1-4, with fans haveing the opportunity each day to win one of 10 autographed Cam Jordan gold jerseys. The giveaways will be run through the Saints app. Click here for more info.
The jersey debut will add an extra layer of intrigue to a game that marks the beginning of a new head coaching era under Kellen Moore, as well as a new starting quarterback. The team announced last week that it would be taking the field as the Week 1 starter, the culmination of a quarterback battle between the second-year pro and rookie Tyler Shough.
