The New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees have agreed to renegotiate his contract reducing his salary from $25 million to the veteran minimum, according to multiple reports.

According to the report, the move frees up roughly $24 million in cap space for the Saints.

ESPN’s Mike Triplett reports that the move is a sign the veteran quarterback is preparing to retire.

Earlier this week Saints coach Sean Payton said he expected an announcement from Brees about whether or not he will retire although multiple reports have said 2020 would be Brees’ last season.

If Brees indeed retires, it would leave the Saints with only one quarterback committed for the 2021 season, Taysom Hill, as backup Jameis Winston is set to become a free agent.

Saint coach Sean Payton has made it clear that New Orleans would like to bring Winston back.
