Saints expected to have joint practices with L.A. Chargers in 2023: report

The 2023 training camp schedule is still a few months off, but it's beginning to come into focus.

The New Orleans Saints are expected to join the L.A. Chargers out in California for joint practices, according to a report from NOLA.com. The teams are in the process of establishing plans for the practices, which still need to be approved by the NFL.

The Chargers hold their training camp work at the Jack Hammet Sports Complex in Costa Mesa. The practices would be in the week preceding a preseason game between the two teams, according to the report, at SoFi Stadium in the second week of the preseason schedule.

The full regular and preseason schedules for all 32 NFL teams is typically released in May. The Saints have traditionally been fond of the joint practice setup, which has the team arrive several days prior to a preseason game for joint on-field work against an opponent, offering a competitive atmosphere and a litmus test during a month of offense vs. defense training camp. The Saints went to Green Bay for joint practices with the Packers during the 2022 preseason. The Saints also held joint practices with the Chargers prior to the 2019 season.

The trip would also offer a homecoming for a handful of current Saints players, including second-year WRs Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave, who have yet to play a game in California during their NFL careers. Newly signed Saints RB Jamaal Williams is also a California native.

Full training camp dates for the Saints have not yet been released, though the schedule typically begins in late July. The Saints are also expected to hold a rookie minicamp, OTAs and a mandatory minicamp prior to the full camp.
