Draft day is finally here and the Saints have a good amount of ammunition to spend owning 8 selections over three days and seven rounds:
Round 1, pick 28
Round 2, pick 60
Round 3, pick 98
Round 3, pick 105
Round 4, pick 133
Round 6, pick 218
Round 7, pick 229
Round 7, pick 255
“I think it's hard to make our team,” said Saints GM Mickey Loomis. “I think we have a lot of talent at a lot of positions. When you look at each of these position groups, a lot of times it's hard to envision a rookie coming in and displacing some of our veterans. So, I wouldn't say that volume is a priority for us. I think quality is a priority for us."
That quality means a lot more than just talent.
“We try to find a group of players that we really like and we really believe will fit on our team,” explained Loomis. “Not just on the roster in terms of playing, but in terms of fitting in the locker room and the culture that exists here. So you put targets on those guys. When you have targets on players, we just believe you've got to go get them, you've got to go and be aggressive and not necessarily always let him fall to you."
We’ll see how aggressive New Orleans is opening night. The Saints own pick #28 in round one, so may need to make a move up the draft board to get that target cornerback or linebacker they desire.
