The Saints have made another transaction involving a quarterback, following their recent signings of Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton.
Veteran signal-caller Blake Bortles asked for and was being granted his release on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.
The request apparently came in the wake of the Saints signing Dalton to be their primary backup, seemingly bumping Bortles down to third-string duties.
The former No. 3 overall draft pick was signed in December to back up rookie starter Ian Book, who took the reins after primary backup Taysom Hill and third-stringer Trevor Siemian were both sidelined by Covid-19.
Bortles didn't see any game action with the Saints, but the team later re-signed him to a futures contract.
The former University of Central Florida star, who turns 30 this month, heads back into free agency after bouncing around between the Rams (for two stints), Broncos, Packers and Saints in recent years.
For his career, he has thrown for 103 touchdowns, 75 interceptions, and a 59% completion rate, almost all coming from 2014-18 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
