Saints signing veteran cornerback ahead of free agency

The Saints' free agent maneuvering continued on Tuesday, with the team agreeing to terms with a veteran cornerback.

New Orleans has signed Ugo Amadi, who began his NFL career with the Seahawks and finished the 2022 season as a member of Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Saints announced the signing Tuesday afternoon.

Amadi was a fourth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2019 and appeared in 47 games, registering 125 tackles (102 solo), 1 fumble recovery and one interception. Amadi has appeared in two games against the Saints in his career (2019 and 2021), registering 3 tackles and a forced fumble.

Amadi appeared in just one game for the Chiefs in 2022 and finished the season on the practice squad, but the Kansas City to New Orleans route is a common one in recent years. The Saints added both Tyrann Mathieu and Daniel Sorenson last season after multiple seasons with the Chiefs, a year after signing former Chiefs DE Tanoh Kpassagnon.

Amadi, whose full first name is Ugochukwu, starred at Oregon in college where he accounted for three defensive scores in his 51 games, including three interceptions returned for touchdowns.

The Saints have been active thus far, also re-signing Kpassagnon, WR Keith Kirkwood and guard Calvin Throckmorton. But the biggest splash came earlier in the week when New Orleans agreed with QB Derek Carr on a 4-year, $150 million deal. The NFL's legal tampering period for free agents begins on March 15.
