The New Orleans Saints will be sending WR Tre'Quan Smith to injured reserve ahead of their season-opener against the Titans.
It's a move that is not particularly surprising, with the veteran WR absent since he left practice with a groin injury on Aug. 9, for which he reportedly underwent surgery. Smith is the first player to be place on regular season IR for the Saints, meaning he can return as early as Week 5 if healthy enough to do so.
The Saints have five other WRs on the roster, all of whom are expected to play, in Michael Thomas, Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Keith Kirkwood and A.T. Perry.
Smith joins three other players on IR in G Trai Turner, LB Andrew Dowell and RB Eno Benjamin, all of whom are done for the season. The move drops the number on the active roster to 51 with Jake Haener also moved to the suspended list. That means the Saints could potentially sign two players. RB Tony Jones Jr. and Ryan Connelly will be practice squad elevations for the game, according to reports.
