Saints name 7 team captains for the 2023 season. Here's what to know.

The captains are here for the New Orleans Saints, and there are a lot of them -- plus one.

The seven team captains, which are decided by a vote among the players, were announced during an annual team dinner on Monday, as first reported by Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com.

That group includes:

- QB Derek Carr
- C Erik McCoy
- DE Cam Jordan
- LB Demario Davis
- S Tyrann Mathieu
- S J.T. Gray
- LS Zach Wood

There are a few notable changes from a year ago, including an extra name with a second special teams captain. Jordan, Davis and Gray were captains a year ago, while Carr, McCoy, Mathieu and Wood are first-timers. The Saints typically name team captains to represent each position group across offense, defense and special teams. Those players are signified by wearing a patch with a large "C" on the breastplate of their uniforms.

Jordan is a team captain for a 9th consecutive year, Davis is entering his 6th and Gray is now in his 3rd.

The players who were captains in 2022 and will not be returning to the role include QB Jameis Winston, RT Ryan Ramczyk and RB Alvin Kamara, though all three remain on the roster.

The Saints open up their 2023 schedule on Sunday, Sept. 10 against the Tennessee Titans at the Caesars Superdome.
