Shortly after noon, NOPD sent a statement saying they were no longer blocking off the area.
"UPDATE: The perimeter for this investigation has been released. The suspect is no longer believed to be in the area. Investigation remains ongoing."
New Orleans Police this morning chased a carjacking suspect to Tulane Avenue and lost track of the armed suspect.
"A suspect in an armed carjacking in the 1900 block of Tulane Avenue incident has fled on foot," NOPD said in an email.
Officers spotted the vehicle taken in a carjacking on the I-10 and followed it down the Claiborne exit before the suspect bailed out and took off running. Cops surrounded the area.
"A two-block perimeter has been established by police in this investigation, bounded by Tulane Avenue to the north, South Claiborne Avenue to the east, Gravier Street to the south and South Roman Street to the west."
The NOPD Public Information officer said people should stay away from that area in the New Orleans medical district.
"The public is asked to avoid the area while police action is underway."
Some people in buildings inside the perimeter had sheltered in place.
The LSU Health New Orleans website said, "Armed subject on top of Roman St. garage. Shelter in place. Police responding."
LSU Health New Orleans lifted the shelter in place shortly after noon.
