The highly-acclaimed Audubon Zoo in New Orleans wanted to show its support for police officers. “Blue at the Zoo,” a take-off on the zoo’s long standing Halloween event known as “Boo at the Zoo,” was created to promote positive interaction between NOPD and the citizens of the city. But “Blue at the Zoo” was abruptly cancelled out of concern that it could be seen as “unintentionally divisive.”
The idea that background talk led to the cancelling of “Blue at the Zoo” because it might be seen as divisive shows a frightening anti-police trend in this country. The cancellation of the event suggests that anything celebrating any aspect of law enforcement is wrong.
We all mostly agree that the overwhelming number of police officers risk their lives every day in their dedicated role of protecting and serving the community. It seems we have reached the point where the bad cops have tainted the image of all cops, and that should be totally denounced.
We must stand up for the dedicated police officers and not tolerate their image being damaged by the few police officers who have chosen the wrong profession. “Blue at the Zoo” should go on as planned, and the few voices that are positions police in general as negative need to be exposed as extreme radicals.
It is time to no longer be afraid of the voices of the few when the few do not represent the whole. But it will take great courage to ignore those who gain from division and allow conventional wisdom to rule the day.
