Business: Weather complicating pre-Christmas travel, rural workers not saving as much for retirement

Getting from here, to there, isn’t going to be easy today. Flight disruptions are mounting in advance of winter weather sweeping through the country.

More than 1,100 flights have been canceled for today and tomorrow thus far.

Many airlines are already offering travel waivers in light of the potential severe storm.

One group of Americans are behind the curve on retirement savings: rural workers.

Rural workers often lack 401(k) plans and have less retirement savings than their urban and suburban counterparts, putting them at risk of retiring later or not at all.

The Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies  says suburban and urban workers are more likely to have saved $250,000 or more, compared with only 18% of rural workers. 13% of rural workers have no household retirement savings.

Futures are lower after stocks rallied yesterday. The Dow Industrials jumped 526, the Nasdaq gained 162 and the S&P 500 was up 56.
