Smoke and flames filled the early morning sky near the Florida Avenue Bridge in New Orleans.
Piles of trash and scrap were burning at Southern Scrap.
WWL TV reports that workers at the site were able to use heavy equipment to bury the flames and control the blaze.
The NOFD remained on the scene to take action if needed.
Witnesses reported large plumes of smoke billowing from the piles as the flames spread.
