The National Hurricane Center says Delta has become a hurricane in the Caribbean, but forecasters don't know where it is headed yet.
"Data from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph."
Hurricane specialists in Miami say the future path and strength are not clear at this time.
"Delta is forecast to approach the northern Gulf Coast late this week," forecasters advised. "While there is large uncertainty in the track and intensity forecasts, there is an increasing risk of dangerous storm surge, wind, and rainfall hazards along the coast from Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle beginning Thursday night or Friday."
The Hurricane Center says residents should ensure they have their hurricane plan in place and monitor updates to the forecast.
Currently forecasters show the path moving through the Gulf of Mexico and Delta becoming a major hurricane with winds of 120 miles per hour, making it a category three storm. The current landfall projection is along the Louisiana coast near Morgan City. That is subject to change over the next few days.
