The National Hurricane Center now gives a tropical wave near Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula a 70% chance of developing into a depression or Tropical Storm Gamma by Monday.
"Conditions are expected to be conducive for development of this system, and a tropical depression is likely to form over the northwestern Caribbean Sea or the south-central Gulf of Mexico," according to the Hurricane Center.
WWL TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum says the parade of cold fronts pushing through Louisiana should also keep any development away from the northern Gulf Coast.
Another tropical wave located further east could develop too.
"This wave is forecast to move westward at 15 to 20 mph during the next several days, and environmental conditions could become a little more conducive for development when the system is over the central or western Caribbean Sea early next week."
For now, its development chance is 20 percent.
