As news broke of the death of Edwin Edwards, political strategist James Carville joined WWL Radio Monday to share some of his memories of the former multi-term Louisiana Governor.
Carville praised Edwards for his ability to think on his feet and for his next-level calm even in the face of intense scrutiny.
“He was that clever. Other than Bill Clinton, I don’t know if I’ve met anybody with a higher political IQ than Edwin Edwards,” Carville said. “What he and Bill Clinton, and certainly Reagan had this attribute… the really good politicians are really competitive, they really try, but they never sweat. They never struggle. They never look like they’re trying too hard. And of course, they are, believe you me. But he never lost his cool.”
Carville said the ability of Edwards to embrace all cultures and races was unique for the time when he came to prominence.
“The fact that not only did he not do anything to promote racial animosity, I think he went out of his way to promote racial diversity,” Carville said. “And that was something that was really different in a politician in Louisiana who came up in politics in the 60s.”
