Four cats are dead, one man is in the hospital, and 14 people are homeless after a two-alarm apartment fire in Algiers.

It happened around 10:45 p.m. Thursday at a complex on MacArthur Boulevard near Kabel Drive.

Firefighters say they pulled the man out of the burning building through a rear first-floor window. EMS crews took that man to a hospital. His condition was not disclosed.

Firefighters also rescued two cats, but four others perished in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
