200 days until voters pick next New Orleans Mayor

Mayor

New Orleans will pick a new mayor in 200 days, and an expert on politics says New Orleans voters need to take it seriously.

Pollster Ron Faucheux says New Orleans voters need to ask themselves what they want from the city to consider who they think will be best at doing the job, and not just fall for the candidate with the snappiest comebacks or catchiest sayings.

"If this is just a personality contest for mayor and a contest of slogans, then the city's going to fail," Faucheux told WWL's Newell Normand.

So what do voters want out of their city?

"The survey I did recently showed that 61 percent of the people in the city thought that the next mayor should focus on improving basic services," Faucheux said. "People in New Orleans and other places are great at complaining for three-and-a-half years about the conditions of the city, and then when an election for mayor comes around, everybody forgets all that."

So far the announced candidates for mayor include city council members Helena Moreno and Oliver Thomas, former judge Arthur Hunter and former 911 director Tyrell Morris.
