At midnight after Fat Tuesday, New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick and Mayor LaToya Cantrell led a contingent of cops through the crowd on Bourbon Street.

The annual tradition ceremonially ends the Carnival celebration as police on horses, walking and in police vehicles announce that Mardi Gras is over.

Moments after that procession began from Canal and Bourbon, someone opened fire with a gun a block away.

"New Orleans Police are investigating a shooting incident at the intersection of Canal and Royal Street," an overnight news release stated. "The incident occurred at approximately 12:23 a.m today."

The email said that three victims were shot.

An initial police report says the victims included one woman and two men.

"Group of females fighting in block when suspect began arguing, produced gun and fired shots striking all three victims. Victims transported to local hospital via EMS."
