A St. Tammany Parish grand jury accuses three teenagers of murder and manslaughter in the death of Sgt. Grant Candies.

Candies died in March after a fleeing vehicle struck him as he laid a spike strip to try and halt the pursuit.

Seventeen-year-olds Adrian Waughtal and Mason Fischer are charged with second-degree murder, along with charges of flight from an officer, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to distribute marijuana.

Waughtal is also charged with assault with a motor vehicle on an officer.

Eighteen-year-old Michael Lanier is charged with manslaughter, along with obstruction and conspiracy to distribute marijuana.

Despite Louisiana law that allows prosecutors to seek the death penalty in regard to the murder of a police officer, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty cannot be imposed on offenders who were under the age of 18 when the crime occurred.

Second-degree murder in Louisiana carries a mandatory sentence of life with no possibility of parole.
